What Happens to Pets in Domestic Violence?

Did you know that many women of domestic abuse stay in relationships because they don’t know what to do with their pets? Pets provide a source of comfort and support for many battered women, who report that concern for their pets affected their decision about leaving or staying in an abusive relationship. If it means leaving the family pet behind, often times they are afraid to leave the home out of fear the abuser will harm their pet.

Many domestic violence programs throughout the country work with local animal rescue programs to find safe, temporary shelter for pets in these situations, and for victims in Colorado there is an organization that takes it one step further by allowing pets to stay in a safe environment with their family.

Arising Hope was founded on a vision and a dream: to assist in ending the effects of domestic violence in the lives of women, children and their family pets. They provide safe, secure emergency housing, and are committed to helping by giving hope, healing and empowerment to victims who find themselves in domestic violence situations.

The Love Adds Up campaign supports Arising Hope, by donating a percentage of the proceeds from sticker and magnet purchases to help provide pet care services so families and pets can stay together. Buy a sticker and show your support for Arising Hope.
