A Slow Walk

October 26, 2009

A beautiful fall day just right for being outside. Cain is moving slowly around the house. He stops in front of a door and just stares and then moves across the room to paw at a my boots sitting next to a chair. He seems disoriented and though his behavior is strange, he is alert and wagging his tail. I wonder if the medication is making him a bit confused.

I grab his leash and he doesn’t act with the same enthusiasm as he once did, but I can tell he wants to go. I also grab Bear and we head for the trail. It is a slow walk, with many stops and pauses. Even Bear seems confused by this new way of going for a walk. We go a short distance and it’s even stranger behavior when Cain decides we have gone far enough and turns to go back home. As we move down the path, he picks up the pace with that “prancing pony trot” and for a brief moment things feel like they once were…
