Tutu Tour and One Cure

Zoey Says - "Stick It To Canine Cancer!"The Tutu Tour For a Cure will be rolling across the country again next week when I pack my bags and head to Tysons Corner, Virginia to attend BlogPaws. I know what you’re saying, “Whoa, Zo, that’s a heck of a long way from home!” And here’s what I say, “Yes it is…1,662 miles from my front door to Tysons Corner, or to be exact 3,324 when you add up the round trip miles!” Yep it’s a long way and a whole lot of miles! We’re going to be powering through several states, with very few scheduled stops, other than the standards which include stopping to take a break, sleeping and eating. Mostly just lots of driving, but that doesn’t mean we won’t stop doing all that we can to help find a cure for cancer. So what does driving across the country to BlogPaws have to do with finding a cure? I thought you’d never ask?

Recently I (actually it was Kelly K) attended a fundraiser for One Cure which was founded by Colorado State University Flint Animal Cancer Center, with the purpose of supporting clinical trials in pet patients at the Flint Animal Cancer Center (FACC). Colorado State University requires no further explanation, but just so you know the FACC is a pioneer in the fight against cancer in pets and people.

The mission of FACC is: To improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in pet animals, translating our research and knowledge to also benefit people with cancer. We do this by offering the latest and most advanced diagnostics and treatments in surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. We attain our mission through an innovative study of cancer, thoughtful and compassionate care, specialized treatment options and procedures.

The FACC sees more than 1,500 new pet cancer patients each year, and enrolls about 400 patients annually in clinical trials that are specific to the type of cancer each dog or cat has been diagnosed with. Donations from individuals and larger organizations, support these clinical trials and lead us closer to eradicating cancer in pets and people.

Some of the exciting news that was revealed at the One Cure fundraiser was the announcement of a study funded by the Anschutz Foundation. The Anschutz Foundation has been a major contributor to the FACC over the past several years and their generous award will greatly expand cancer clinical trials for collaborative research between Colorado State University, and the University of Colorado Cancer Center on The Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. Two major universities working together, contributing to the fight against cancer in animals and people. Pawsome!!!!

So what exactly is a clinical trial?

Clinical trials are research studies used in all areas of medicine to evaluate new types of treatments. In the world of canine cancer, clinical trial are research studies in which pet animals with naturally occurring cancer can participate. Many of the same types of treatments and medicine that are available to humans can be used to treat animals. Since cancers in dogs closely resemble that of human cancers, these studies provide valuable research that benefits both humans and animals, while aiding in the development of new or improved cancer treatments for both.

So back to the Tutu Tour…My mom’s been a long time supporter of the Flint Animal Cancer Center, and we put our heads together and came up with a way to include them on the next leg of our tour. We’ve created a fundraiser for One Cure with a goal to raise $3,324 (equal to the miles we’ll be traveling). We’re going to need LOTS of help on this one, so I’m asking that you please put your paws on the keyboard and help us out beginning with sharing this post and our Crowdrise fundraiser Zoey’s Tutu Tour For a Cure. Whether you’ve got an extra dollar or a few, we would love your support for this important area of cancer research. Just leave the driving to us, and let’s work together to find a cure for cancer! Thank you very much. ~Zo & k
